OVER 100 people attended a public meeting in Haringey, north London, last Sunday called by the Roger Sylvester Justice Campaign (RSJC). “Five years after his death we are still fighting for justice,” said Rupert, his father.

Just months after a coroners’ jury found that Roger had been “unlawfully killed” the family is now facing another legal battle. Eight police officers are seeking to overturn the inquest verdict. Incredibly the Metropolitan Police Authority will fund this appeal from taxpayers’ money. Even ultra-loyal Blairite minister David Lammy, who spoke at the meeting, said, “It is wrong that the Police Authority is funding the officers’ appeal.”

The family invited other campaigns to speak on the platform-Andrew Jordan’s family, Mikey Powell’s campaign and the Harry Stanley campaign. David Lammy did himself no favours by leaving the meeting before hearing contributions from the floor. Respect candidate Sait Akgul said, to applause, “Mr Lammy should stay and hear what the people have to say. What’s the point of voting for him if he does nothing for his people?”
