•Charges dropped against UAF leaders

police this week dropped a threat to charge leading Unite Against Fascism (UAF) members Weyman Bennett and Rhetta Moran.

The pair faced possible conspiracy charges—an offence that can carry a substantial jail term—after a demonstration against the racist English Defence League (EDL) in Bolton last March.

Anti-fascist campaigners argued that this unprecedented use of conspiracy laws was a threat not just to the right to protest against fascism, but could curtail the right to any public protest.

Weyman said, “This is a victory for anti-fascists and for the right to protest.

“I’m proud to say that the threat of these charges has not deterred any of us from continuing to stand up against the EDL.”

•Preston takes on the EDL racists

Activists are building a counter-protest against a planned march by the English Defence League (EDL) in Preston on Saturday 27 November.

Representatives from Preston’s mosques last week came to a meeting called by independent socialist councillor Michael Lavalette to discuss the march.

“I wanted to outline what the EDL are about—their history of racism and violence,” Michael told Socialist Worker.

A film was shown highlighting the racist nature of the EDL.

Preston UAF and trades council are calling all anti-racists to gather at 12 noon on Saturday 27 November in Fish Market.

•Stop the English Defence League in Luton—no to the racist thugs dividing our communities: national counter-protest called by Unite Against Fascism, Saturday 5 February 2011.

•Anti-fascists in the Black Country are celebrating a further collapse in the BNP vote. The Nazis polled just 141 votes in the Rushall-Shelfield ward of Walsall on Thursday of last week—dramatically down on the 648 (21 percent) they got in 2007.
