Many people in Britain value the cultural diversity that immigration brings, according to a new report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation that disputes many assumptions that underlie recent government policy over immigration.

The report, titled “Immigration and social cohesion in the UK: the rhythms and realities of everyday life”, shows that increased levels of immigration do not automatically lead to increased tensions between communities.

“There is no simple relationship between high levels of diversity and poor cohesion,” the report says. “Poverty and lack of opportunities” were the causes of poor social cohesion, not immigration, it adds.

The report’s authors also cast doubt on the government’s obsession with promoting “Britishness”. “The findings of this research go against the grain of the idea that we need a fixed notion of Britishness and British values,” the report says.
