TECHNICIANS AND other workers at the Royal Opera House have voted to strike over disciplinary action against a union official. Members of the BECTU technicians’ union backed a walkout by 80 percent.

The union says it will decide next week when to call a strike, but has pledged any stoppages will not lead to performances being cancelled. BECTU has 250 members at the Royal Opera House, based in London’s Covent Garden, working in the box office, marketing and backstage.

The ballot was called in protest at the suspension of BECTU branch secretary Pat Styles over allegations about “aggressive behaviour”.
