Royals rob the public purse and pay a pittance back in tax

King Charles has something to share with us. Don’t get excited–it’s not the piles of wonga wedged under his golden throne. It’s his tax bill.

The royals have been shamed into making their taxes public. They are desperate to stop us scrutinising their affairs and spotting the vast quantities of our money that flows into their overfilled coffers.

The monarch is not obliged to pay income tax, inheritance tax or capital gains tax. Charles voluntarily chucks HMRC a few million to stop us demanding more.

So Charles paid £12.9 million in taxes in the last financial year. He gets a whopping payout from the Duchy of Lancaster.

In 2025-6, that amounted to £25.2 million.

Work-shy Willie, or Prince William as he is sometimes known, paid £7.76 million in taxes in 2024-5.

William owns the Duchy of Cornwall which is worth over a billion and includes Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Their tax bill sounds like a lot but it is not particularly generous given they were paid £100 million from the sovereign grant–that’s paid by us.

The sovereign grant has doubled in three years.

This higher figure was decided by Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves and the keeper of the privy purse, James Chalmers.

Fiscal rules are only for us–for the elderly, the young and those with disabilities–not for the mega rich.

The grant is paying for Buck House to transition to green energy.

That won’t touch the sides of the global warming caused the helicopter-loving royals whose 177 crucial trips in a year cost us £733,063.

One of these was a 100 mile ride to whisk Charles and Camilla from a tedious family wedding to the Epsom Derby in June.  

We’ve paid £370 million to renovate Buck House. Charles and Camilla say they don’t want to live there after all and they might let some plebs in to admire their stolen treasures.

And they’ll probably have the cheek to charge for entrance.

The royals pretend this is all about transparency but they have given no details about how these figures were arrived at, and what expenses they have claimed against the tax bill.

Here are some of the other things we paid for:

• William’s trip to freedom-loving Saudi Arabia cost £130,000
• Charles and Camilla’s jolly to Italy cost £126,946
• One trip out on the royal train cost £48,460–which makes even Aviva look cheap

William was also getting £1.5 million from renting out Dartmoor Prison which is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall.

The prison had to be closed when poisonous gas, raydon, was found in the buildings.

So William has decided to donate the rent to the local area.

Better still, perhaps the prison could be repurposed as a new home for William and the rest of the royals.
