More than 200 students boycotted classes for two hours at a Bristol school on Friday of last week. The school students were protesting at a plan by the Labour city council to close their school.
Striking students gathered outside the gates of Lawrence Weston Secondary and chanted, ‘Let’s be clear-our school stays here!’ The students had also made banners saying things like ‘Don’t mess with our education’. The students’ action was supported by many parents and staff who have been campaigning against the closure.
‘They have not listened to us so far,’ said parent governor Debbie Ashley about the council. ‘So the children felt they had to do something.’ ‘You have to agree with their sentiments,’ said headteacher Mike Rome of the students’ protest.
The school, along with Bristol’s Lockleaze School, is earmarked for closure by the city council. But parents, students and staff claim the small school is improving and should stay open.
