FORMER MI5 secret service officer David Shayler returned to Britain on Monday and was immediately charged with various offences. But the government has not directly taken up his most embarrassing allegation-that British agents were involved in a plot to assassinate Libyan leader Colonel Gadaffi.

Instead he will be charged about allegations he made to a newspaper three years ago, including the claim that MI5 held files on prominent Labour politicians including Jack Straw.

Shayler said that he had no doubt why the Gadaffi allegation had not been included: ‘I wonder whether this is an attempt to prevent the jury from hearing the whole story.’
