Workers at Sheffield College were set to strike on Wednesday of this week against another round of redundancies.

The UCU union members are one of several groups of college workers facing cuts.

One UCU member at the college told Socialist Worker, “I have heard that there will be around 100 redundancies made to full grade lecturers throughout the college.

“This follows redundancies already made to support staff and middle management this academic year.

“Lecturers have been expecting something like this to happen, but the scale has been a shock to everyone. Morale is low and everyone is nervous about the future.”

The worker explained that more cuts would have a devastating impact. “There are a lot of pressures on staff because retention and success of students is so valuable,” they said.

“The redundancies among support staff left some of our most vulnerable students more vulnerable and without the assistance they need.

“Success rates this year directly impact on funding for next year, so the pressure is really on teaching staff.”

As with many college disputes, the bosses’ approach to education is far different to that of the workers. As the UCU member said, “Top management seem out of touch with why we are all here – for the students. They appear only interested in ticking boxes and making profit”.

They added, “Colleges should not be treated like a business.”
