Negotiations with local managers appeared to have brought a deal back in October. The agreement, signed by then NUJ general secretary John Foster, was torn up by management at another level of the company. The turning point in the campaign was NUJ members’ angry response to the company going back on our agreement.

Managers knew that our application to the arbiters set up under the new employment law was backed up by pressure on the ground from members. Sticker and poster campaigns, and protests outside our workplace showed the company we were serious and forced it to sign a deal under the new law. Our victory is a tribute to the solidarity of NUJ members since Emap bought our magazines four years ago.

Now we are looking forward to putting our first pay claim in-union rights are just the beginning.
