Six arrested under Terrorism Act

West Midlands Police have charged six men under the Terrorism Act 2006 for an alleged plot to attack an English Defence League (EDL) demonstration in Dewsbury last month.

The six are Jewel Uddin, 26, Omar Mohammed Khan, 27, Mohammed Hasseen, 23, Anzal Hussein, 24, Mohammed Saud, 22, and Kamran Zohaib Ahmed, 22, all from the Birmingham area.

They were arrested two days after police impounded a car connected to a number of the men on 30 June—the day of the Dewsbury protest.

Police say they found weapons and an explosive device in a car. However, West Midlands Police would not confirm to Socialist Worker whether the car was stopped before or after the EDL’s march in Dewsbury.

A police spokesperson also dismissed reports of a note being found in the car addressed to the “English Drunkards League” as “media speculation”.
