Workers at Tyneside Safety Glass achieved a breakthrough in their dispute over pay on Friday of last week after three weeks on strike.

The Unite union members got an improved offer of 2.8 percent this year and up to 3 percent for each of the next two years.

They have also retained their breaks, which bosses wanted to get rid of to pay for the wage increase, and secured the reinstatement of a member sacked earlier in the dispute.

The workers saw the offer as a victory.

Bosses had appeared to want to weaken the union, but workers have built it with pickets and demonstrations, winning Polish agency workers to join the strike.
