Socialist candidate Michael Lavalette has stormed back into Preston’s council chamber this morning, Friday, with a resounding vote against austerity, war and lack of political representation.

Michael, who was a councillor for Preston Town Centre until May last year, beat his nearest candidate, Labour’s incumbent Salim Desai, by nearly 100 votes.

Michael spoke to Socialist Worker just after the result was announced.

“Four short weeks ago we saw George Galloway’s election in the Bradford Spring,” he said. “Today we saw that come sweeping over the Pennines into Preston with this remarkable result.

“Across the city Labour made sweeping gains. But in the Town Centre we dislodged the sitting councillor—despite Labour throwing everything at us.

“Early on in the campaign Labour said they’d make huge gains in Preston—and that’s proven to be true.

“But they also said that if I won it would take the gloss off that victory.

“We’ve managed to take the gloss off that victory, and been able to show in practice that there is an alternative to austerity and the political representation the mainstream parties are providing.

“We won through the votes of working class people—black, white and Asian—and everyone who wants a fighting alternative to the Tories and their vicious attacks on us.

“Now we have to use this victory to strengthen our fight against the Tories.”
