Socialist Worker has no rich backers and is funded purely by members, subscribers and supporters.
Every year, we run an appeal to raise money to support the paper.
We’re trying to raise £150,000 this year so that we can improve our coverage of the growing battles against the Tory cuts, the impact of the economic crisis on ordinary people, the anti-racist movement and much more.
The appeal has had a very good start—raising £72,156 so far. That’s nearly half of our target in less than four weeks.
One subscriber, Stewart, sent in a £50 cheque last week, with a note reading: “I have recently been made redundant and I regard this donation as an investment to protect the country’s public services.”
Amanda, a bus worker, has filled out a whole collection sheet in her workplace.
She said, “I decided I would collect for the appeal, feeling a lot more confident in asking people, as I stood as a socialist in branch elections this year and got very solid support.
“People knowing that I’m a socialist has made collecting quite easy.
“When I ask colleagues for a donation, I make sure they understand what it is for. I explain that Socialist Worker does not have millionaire owners nor does it accept advertising from rich corporations.
“Its existence depends entirely on financial support from party members, supporters and the wider working class.
“I don’t ask for a lot of money—bus drivers aren’t rich—but my colleagues can usually spare a pound or two.
“It’s not only the money we collect that’s important, it is also the fact that we are able to take socialist ideas and arguments to a wider layer of people.”
The week 11-15 October will be our workplace collection week. We want every supporter of Socialist Worker to ask their friends and colleagues for a donation.
