AROUND 70 people protested outside Liverpool prison in Walton last Saturday in solidarity with refugees detained there.
They were addressed by an asylum seeker who told supporters of conditions inside the prison and the racism which sparked the protest. Speakers from Asylum Link and Liverpool Trades Council, and activists from the Genoa protests were well received.
Some of the asylum seekers who organised a hunger strike at the prison have been dispersed to distant prisons. Activists have been boosted by the protest and the good media coverage, including the front page of the Independent on Sunday.
Immigration detainees at Haslar and Lindholme have also held hunger strikes. A detainee in Rochester detention centre/prison has been on hunger strike since 15 July.
