Residents and council workers in Southwark met on Thursday of last week to launch a campaign against another attack launched by the Liberal Democrat led council. The council plans to transfer home care services for elderly residents to a new private company.
Residential services in the borough are currently run by Southwark Home Care (SHC), which was spun off from the council a few years ago.
Now the council wants to transfer the services to a cheaper provider, which would significantly reduce the quality of care and slash care workers’ already poor wages.
John Mulrenan, branch secretary of the Unison council workers’ union, pledged to fight the council’s cost cutting plans at the meeting, which was also addressed by activists from the Southwark Pensioners Action Group, Southwark Respect and the Green Party.
Peter John, leader of the council’s Labour opposition group, also addressed the meeting and promised to back the campaign to save residential care.
Residents and campaigners were due to lobby Southwark council over the issue on Tuesday of this week.
