The TUC and most unions are backing a major lobby of parliament in London on 19 October, where thousands of trade unionists are expected to take part.

And on 20 October there are protests planned across Britain as chancellor George Osborne swings the axe.

One of the biggest events will be the Scottish TUC march in Edinburgh on 23 October.

Grahame Smith, STUC general secretary, said, “Over the next months we will work alongside community and campaigning organisations to argue for policies which will promote hope for young people, fairness for the vulnerable and services for those who need them.

“As a first stage in that campaign we are holding a Scotland-wide demonstration.

“In the run-up to that day, we will also be travelling the length of the country to provide a platform for Scotland’s communities to have their say about the real issues we are facing.”

Activists in Glasgow are holding a street rally this Saturday to build for the demo.

There will also be a march on 23 October in Cardiff, as well as many other regional protests.

In London the RMT, FBU and other unions have organised a march to join a rally at Congress House.

STUC march and rally: Saturday 23 October, assemble 11am, East Market Street, Edinburgh

Glasgow street rally: Saturday

2 October, 12 noon at Buchanan Street underground
