Striking workers shut down a major exhibition in Glasgow last weekend.
The strikers, members of the Unison union, estimate that keeping the Glasgow Boys exhibition shut will have cost up to £20,000 in takings.
Bosses at Glasgow Life – formerly Culture and Sport Glasgow – still managed to open the rest of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum by bringing in agency workers, though some refused to cross the 20-strong picket line.
Strikers felt the day was a success. It was part of a programme of targeted action, shutting down a different visitor attraction each weekend.
Workers are due to strike at Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art and the People’s Palace this weekend.
These strikes are better than having a long period of silence between one-day action, and they keep most members on full pay while having an effect. But they also make it easier for the bosses to organise strike-breaking.
The next action across all sites is set for Monday 19 July – it is much better to bring everyone out, united.
