Up to 800 workers at car parts maker Delphi Diesel Systems in Sudbury, Suffolk, are set to strike over pay. Workers in the Unite union are planning to strike for one day a week starting next Monday.

They are also beginning an overtime ban.

Last year workers at the plant in Sudbury’s Newton Road were forced to take time off as paid leave, which they would be made to “pay back” later by losing pay or holidays.

One worker, who didn’t want to be named, said, “We had weeks and weeks where we were on short time and ended up with banked hours.

“We’re now having to pay it all back.”

The workers are angry that managers worked as normal during that time—meaning they sat in their offices doing nothing and got paid for it.

“The management said we are all in the same boat,” said the worker, “but they didn’t suffer the same way.

“The average person ended up owing £1,500 to the company. It goes a lot deeper than just the pay deal.”
