Students have continued to win many victories after occupying their universities to show solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Cardiff Students Against War won a major victory last week when management divested all its shares in the arms trade after a three-day occupation.

Management also agreed to send computers to Gaza and advertise the DEC Gaza appeal on the university website.

Lecturers and politicians, including Plaid Cymru AM Leanne Wood and Labour councillor Ray Davies, addressed the occupation.

It received messages of support from Cardiff City Unison union branch and Noam Chomsky among others.

Well over 100 students were involved over the course of the protest.

Activists are now planning a victory rally to build for future campaigns, including sending a coach to the G20 protests in London.

Celebrating

Students at St Andrews university were also celebrating after a week-long occupation forced their university management to agree to hold a fundraising day on campus for the Gaza appeal.

Management also agreed to look into offering scholarships to students from disaster-hit areas.

About 200 students at York university held a noisy demonstration on Friday of last week, demanding an end to the university’s investment in the arms trade.

The demonstration was the biggest protest by students at York for many years.

Occupations at Manchester university and the University of East London (UEL) are continuing. Manchester students have called a demonstration on their campus on Wednesday of this week.

At UEL a series of big meetings and debates has kept the occupation lively and political.

The next step for students is to build for the G20 and Stop the War demonstrations and continue to build Stop the War groups on campus.
