The Socialist Worker financial appeal is now on £43,856—nearly 30 percent of our £150,000 target.

A chunk has come from students.

Socialist Worker student supporters met last weekend to prepare for the new term, furious at the Tory government calling them a drain on society and threatening a fees hike.

Donations of £970 came in from student groups including Glasgow, Manchester, Lampeter in mid-Wales, Birmingham, Essex and Sheffield Hallam.

And students are setting up fundraising events to help raise money from supporters on campuses.

It is also fitting that—in the week the TUC calls for a national demonstration against cuts—we have recieved two £100 donations from trade union branches.

One is Unite Greater Manchester IT branch, whose members Socialist Worker supported during their strike last year, and the other is the postal workers’ CWU South Central No 1 union branch.

Socialist Worker exists in order to support and promote working class struggle. That’s why it is sustained by donations from working class people and trade union branches—not corporate shareholders or advertisers.

We ask our readers to try to get their union branches to donate and to collect money at work—following in the important tradition of socialist newspapers.

Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin wrote in the revolutionary newspaper Pravda in 1912:

“A newspaper founded on the basis of five-kopek pieces collected by small factory circles of workers is a far more dependable, solid and serious undertaking (both financially and, most important of all, from the standpoint of the development of the workers’ democratic movement) than a newspaper founded with tens and hundreds of roubles contributed by sympathising intellectuals.”

Although, of course, we don’t say no to hundreds of roubles from sympathising intellectuals!

A model motion for union branches and a collection sheet for workplaces are available on the resources section of our website.
