Sunderland College lecturers are balloting for strikes over pay. College bosses want to snatch £10,000 from some lecturers by reclassifying them as “associate teachers”.

Nigel Harrett, vice principal of curriculum at the college, bizarrely tried to reassure workers by claiming that the pay cut would be £9,042.

The attack follows 36 job cuts announced in March.

The workers’ UCU union says the pay cut will leave some lecturers unable to pay their mortgages. It also points out that the cut will have an impact on pensions.

The ballot ends on Friday of next week.
