Around forty students occupied a lecture theatre in the Arts building following a protest on the campus. Lewis is a Socialist Worker Student Society (SWSS) activist part of organising the occupation.
He told Socialist Worker, “We are occupying to support the staff and we’re using it as an organising centre to build wider solidarity for the strike and join the picket lines from 7am tomorrow.
“We had a big solidarity rally and demo yesterday too with about 170 students and staff with good speeches from members of the UCU, Unite and Unison unions.”
The rally was followed by a Students Union emergency general meeting where a motion passed to unconditionally support the staff strike.
Support has been pouring in for the occupation. Lewis said, “The solidarity messages have been great, we’ve been reading them all out to loud cheers, they’ve really kept everyone’s spirits high knowing there so much support.”
The occupation continues.
