NUT union members in Haringey, north London, have been shocked by the suspension of their branch chair Julie Davies.

Haringey council suspended Julie on Monday of this week pending an investigation into what Haringey NUT committee members describe as trivial and trumped up charges.

Union members responded swiftly with a number of meetings in schools calling for Julie’s reinstatement and pledging to take collective action in her support.

Hundreds of trade unionists across Britain have signed a petition, circulated by the NUT, calling for her reinstatement. Messages of support have flooded in.

Julie became a target for press harassment after her role in a high profile campaign to stop Downhills primary school being forced to become an academy.

During this campaign former education secretary Michael Gove described Julie and Downhills parents as “enemies of promise”.

Attacks on Julie continued as news of her suspension filtered out.

Local chair of governors and former editor of the Times Educational Supplement Gerard Kelly compared Julie to a Nazi.

He tweeted, “Julie Davies has probably been the biggest impediment to education in Haringey since Herman Goering”.

When asked what Goering did to Haringey schools, Kelly responded, “Bombed quite a few of the schools, though arguably did less damage than Julie”.

He appears to have deleted the tweets.

Downhills parent Sarah Williams told Socialist Worker, “Julie stood up for children and parents when Gove forced our school to become an academy.

“Parents should support her now.”
