Teachers in the NUT and NASUWT unions were discussing taking industrial action together as Socialist Worker went to press.

Both unions are currently engaged in action short of a strike to defend their pensions, pay and conditions.

The Tories are waging war on teachers. Education secretary Michael Gove wants to bring in performance-related pay and make it easier for heads to sack teachers.

Many teachers are furious.

Angry NUT reps meetings saw teachers demanding that their union call strikes to stop the attacks.

Unity with other unions such as the NASUWT would be good.

But it shouldn’t be used to delay the NUT calling strikes.

A programme of walkouts can stop the Tories.
