It isn’t only the most rabid right wing newspapers that have gone on the offensive against Roma and migrants in general. It’s the liberal ones too.

The Guardian ran an article on Page Hall last Saturday. It said Page Hall had seen a “huge influx” of Roma—then admitted “Nobody knows for sure how many Roma people have come to Sheffield”.

“In Page Hall rubbish fills the gutters, and stained mattresses and sofas are piled up in gardens,” it went on. But it didn’t explain why this should be blamed on Roma.

The Daily Star used the scare to run an editorial complaining that “Britain has been swamped by immigration in the past two decades”.

“Another flood of new faces could tip our currently peaceful nation into violence,” it continued. “Britain is full. It’s time to close the door.”
