The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has got involved in a bizarre campaign.

It wants to stop a mosque being built next to the “elite” Sandhurst military academy at Camberley, in Surrey’s stockbroker belt.

The local council has already granted planning permission for the mosque.

But the MoD says that Sandhurst’s parade ground could be viewed from the top of the mosque’s minaret—and this would be a “security risk”.

Groups opposing the mosque claim it will become a beacon for “radical Islamists”, without offering any evidence why this should be the case.

Local Muslims have used a former school building as a mosque for the past 14 years, and now want to replace it with a purpose-built structure.

A council spokesperson said, “There will be no access to the minarets above the roof level of the building.”
