Council housing is under fresh attack.
The Tories claim that “rich” council tenants are stopping poorer people who need homes from getting them.
But this is rank hypocrisy from millionaire Tories with second homes on expenses.
They claim that 6,000 people living in council homes earn more than £100,000.
Even if this were true, there are a staggering 1.8 million families on the housing waiting list.
Forcing some council tenants to pay more won’t help these people.
The Tories really want all housing to be subject to market forces.
That’s why Cameron made such a big deal of his “right to buy” plans, rehashed from Margaret Thatcher.
Council housing should be available to everyone—regardless of income.
And the way to solve the housing crisis is to build more affordable homes.
