Protests at Prestwick airport, near Glasgow, have forced the government to say that civilian airports will not be used to move arms to Israel (see Protesting against Israel’s assault). Last week two chartered cargo aircraft carrying a special consignment of GBU-28 bombs for Israel stopped to refuel at Prestwick airport.

The GBU-28 is a 5,000 pound “bunker buster” bomb and is designed to burrow into the ground before detonating with the effect of a mini earthquake. This makes it ideal for attacking underground bases and air raid shelters.

The GBU-28 bomb is tipped with radioactive depleted uranium. When it explodes the uranium turns into a fine dust that can contaminate the environment – including underground water supplies—for thousands of years. Uranium is genotoxic, which means that it causes DNA to mutate.

This could be a trigger to tumours and cancers. There is growing evidence that Israel is using a range of weapons of mass destruction including “fuel-air” explosives, chemical weapons such as white phosphorous and cluster bombs.
