Gordon Brown’s government is pushing ahead with plans to further extend the period that terrorism suspects can be held without charge.
Home secretary Jacqui Smith last week she wanted to increase the current detention limit from 28 days to 42 days.
Even the former attorney general Lord Goldsmith and the current director of public prosecutions Sir Ken Macdonald have said they see no need to extend the limit – as did Jonathan Evans, head of MI5.
Tony Blair introduced the 28 day limit after he failed to get plans for 90 day detention through parliament.
