There is a renewed attack on abortion rights in Britain. Anti-abortionists are still trying to hijack the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill by tabling amendments attacking a woman’s right to choose.

These include cuts to the time limit for abortion and introducing compulsory counselling for women seeking abortion.

But there are also amendments to the bill that would expand women’s access to abortion – such as abolishing the requirement to obtain two doctors’ signatures and extending the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.

Abortion Rights is holding a public meeting in London next week to re-launch the campaign. Campaigners from Northern Ireland will join the meeting.

Goretti Horgan from the Alliance for Choice in Northern Ireland told Socialist Worker, “There is a false idea that there’s no support for abortion rights in Northern Ireland. We’ve had a brilliant response campaigning on the streets.”

Public meeting Tuesday 7 October, 7pm, Committee Room 10, House of Commons. Pro-choice publicity stunt Wednesday 8 October, 10.30am, House of Commons.
