Colleagues and supporters of teacher Tony Souter were overjoyed last week as a disciplinary committee overruled a decision to dismiss him.
Tony, the Warwickshire National Union of Teachers (NUT) joint divisional secretary, was dismissed by management at Kingsbury Specialist Science and Mathematics College.
Teachers at the school voted to strike in support of Tony on Thursday this week. That action has been withdrawn.
Tony was charged with gross misconduct and forced from his job. His colleagues maintained he was being attacked for his union activities.
Last November, one student was hit by a piece of potassium during one of Tony’s lessons and suffered a small burn.
A safety screen was used in accordance with the school’s health and safety practices.
The appropriate medical procedures were followed, and neither the child nor parent made a complaint about Tony’s conduct.
Tony followed the correct process in reporting the incident. He has an unblemished health and safety record.
