The Tories came under fire over the Staffordshire NHS scandal at the annual conference of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) this week.

The RCN’s Peter Carter said the government was ignoring some recommendations from the Francis inquiry.

It has refused to implement minimum staffing levels.

Carter told delegates that this leaves in place “the systematic failures which allowed such a tragedy to happen in the first place.”

The Francis inquiry said cost-cutting and corporate interests lay behind the scandal.

But it also said the RCN did not give workers enough support and that its roles as trade union and professional body should be split.
