Torture goes on
TORTURE VICTIMS seeking asylum in Britain are being locked up in prisons. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees said last week that Britain is the only European Union state which locks up refugees who have been tortured and who have not been convicted of any offence.
The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture says it has identified at least 11 such cases. The 11 had been tortured by electric shocks, beatings, whipping, burning and semi-suffocation.
The foundation found asylum seekers detained for up to 20 months. This sometimes happens long after medical evidence backing torture claims becomes available.
