Tube drivers strike in solidarity with sacked driver

Seventy seven tube drivers struck on Wednesday of last week over the unfair dismissal of a driver at Rickmansworth, north west London. The strike by Aslef union members hit services on the Metropolitan Line.

The driver had a 33 year unblemished record but was dismissed after a passenger was trapped in a door, injuring her leg.

Aslef acting general secretary Simon Weller said, “It was a regrettable incident, of course—but the sanction is totally unfair. This driver was not at fault. The problem was caused by safety deficiencies, especially concerning mirrors, which we had reported regularly to management.”
