Mohammed, a Tunisian socialist living in Britain, spoke to Socialist Worker minutes after Mubarak announced he was standing down:

“I spoke to my mother in Tunis. She said she was in a grocery shop when the news came across that Mubarak had gone.

Everyone just dropped their shopping and rushed out of the shop. People went onto the street cheering. Cars drove up and down hooting their horns.

In Tunisia people were feeling anguished, but this will renew their confidence.

A lot of people were scared because we’ve been moving through uncharted waters.

But now we are not alone!

Together who knows what we can achieve.”
