ROYAL MAIL management have begun formal disciplinary procedures against CWU union rep Mark Dolan from north London. A worker made a complaint against Mark after he had overheard a discussion about the World Trade Centre suicide attacks. When Mark tried to settle the matter amicably, the same worker then made a further complaint, this time of harassment.

Some local management sources have made it known that they do not believe there is any case for Mark to answer, and that they were prepared to let the matter rest. But higher management want to go ahead with a disciplinary procedure. There is a real danger that bosses may try to sack Mark, who is one of the best known union militants in London.

Mark has worked for the Post Office for 21 years, and has been central to building the union at the NDO office. Delivery workers at NDO are facing crucial talks as the office moves towards closure. Mark is their union rep.

It is useful for management to have this case pending, as it keeps Mark out of the negotiations. Over 300 workers walked out on strike when the first moves were made against Mark. The strike succeeded in getting him taken back to work (in another section) whilst his case is heard.

More solidarity is needed now, and the full backing of the union at every level. A campaign has been launched to defend Mark.

AROUND 100 postal workers at the NW6 Kilburn delivery office in north west London walked out illegally on Monday against staffing arrangements.
