Delegations of Unison union members from across Britain helped to form a confident and determined 500-strong march through Manchester city centre last Sunday.

At the rally NUJ journalist’s union official Jenny Lennox pointed out that two of the charges against Karen were about speaking to the media.

“Karen has a right to speak out, and we have a right to hear what is happening inside the NHS,” she said.

Reena Wood, deputy convenor of north west Unison, said she was very proud that Unison is “solidly behind Karen and this dispute”.

Health worker Jim Fagan, from Tower Hamlets Unison in east London, took a delegation of strikers around his hospital last week.

He came to Manchester to tell the rally that the strikers were “fighting for the soul of the NHS”.

Solidarity

Claire Lyall from Glasgow Unison explained that her branch was represented on the march because, having recently taken indefinite strike action themselves, “it was very important we showed solidarity”.

Her branch pledged £500 to the Manchester strike fund.

Firefighters and lecturers from the north west regions of the FBU and UCU unions were represented on the march, as was a Unite (Amicus section) union branch from Birmingham.

Karen Reissmann ended the rally saying, “If they want to stop this dispute, let me get on with being a nurse and the strikes will end.”
