NHS trade union activists in the Unite union are gearing up for a day of action over pay on Wednesday 3 December.

The action follows a ballot of Unite’s 100,000 members in the NHS that showed majorities for both strike action and action short of strikes.

Our bills are going up by more than the 4.5 percent rate of inflation and yet our pay is being restricted to around 2.75 percent.

That is an outrage.

Unite members in the health service are clearly fed up with years of below-inflation pay deals, and the prospect of many more to come.

We have decided that, despite acceptance of the deal by other NHS trade unions, our members will not be made to pay the price for the recession.

The day of action is a work to rule with, additionally, demonstrations and rallies in some parts of the country, and smaller stunts and protests in others.

We are hoping that the day will act as a springboard for the strike action that is planned for early next year.

By taking action, we hope to win a better settlement for this year.

We also want to increase pressure on the pay review body to reopen the deal for years two and three in order to take account of the fact that the cost of living will continue to rise.
