SUPPORT IS growing for the Unite Against Fascism coalition in its campaign against the British National Party in the run-up to the 10 June elections. The latest of the launch meetings in local areas saw over 130 people attend in Wakefield Town Hall, including representatives from trade unions and Muslim organisations.

Unite nationally is urging activists to mobilise for two days of coordinated activities against the BNP. Weyman Bennett, joint secretary of Unite, explained, ‘There are two days of action on Sunday 4 April and 2 May. We are asking local Unite groups to plan distribution and leafleting of town centres and streets. Why not hire a speaker van, contact local celebrities to get their support and invite trade unions to bring their banners to photo calls?’

The TUC has organised two conferences in Birmingham and London to encourage trade unionists to get involved in anti-BNP campaigning. They both take place on Saturday 3 April. ‘Defeating fascism in London and the south east’ will be held at Congress House in Great Russell Street, London, from 10am to 1.30pm.

Speakers include Frances O’Grady, TUC deputy general secretary, and Lee Jasper, chair of Unite Against Fascism. To book your place phone 020 7467 1220. The Unite Against Fascism rally will take place at Birmingham’s NEC from 11am to 4pm. The speakers include TUC general secretary Brendan Barber and Trevor Phillips from the Commission for Racial Equality.
