United Utilities

“THEY’RE sacrificing workers just to make money.” That was the comment of Peter Jones, one of 250 North West Water workers who joined a march in Manchester last Saturday. The company is owned by the privatised giant United Utilities which provides water, power and telecom services. Last Saturday’s march followed two one day strikes by the workers, members of the GMB union, last month. United Utilities management says the 520 North West Water workers who fix leaks will be transferred to work for contractors. Bosses refused to give any guarantees on workers’ pensions, pay or conditions. North West Water worker Mick Williams says, “We’ve been stabbed in the back. I’ve worked for the firm for 23 years.” Steve Smith added, “Is New Labour going to do anything? Water, gas, electricity, telecom-they should all be taken back and nationalised.”
