A 24-year old US soldier has refused his deployment to Iraq.
Mattis Chiroux says he does not want to be “part of the problem” in Iraq and that he will not go into hiding, but stay in the US to face whatever charges the army levels at him.
He said, “My decision is based on my desire to no longer continue violating my core values to support an illegal and unconstitutional occupation.”
Mattis, a reservist who has already served in Afghanistan, Germany, Japan and the Phillipines, went to Congress last week and wept on hearing the testimony of army veterans speaking about the failings of the Iraq war.
