Around 170 people packed into a vibrant anti‑cuts meeting in Tottenham, north London, on Wednesday of last week.
The meeting was backed by Right to Work, the local Trades Council and Haringey Alliance for Public Services.
Teenagers in the borough are battling to save their youth centres.
Tamsin Murray, an activist with Save Haringey’s Youth Centres campaign, explained the positive role that youth centres have in inner city areas like Tottenham.
The youth centres campaign is fusing with the great groundswell of student action around the axing of Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) and hikes in tuition fees.
Around 25 youth centre campaigners came to the meeting—more could not come because they were kettled by police at the student protest in Whitehall.
Local trade unionists, Frank Murray from the RMT and Paul Power from the NUT, spoke about their struggles.
Haringey Right To Work convenor Jenny Sutton called for solidarity with the students and for a general strike.
Tottenham’s Labour MP David Lammy had agreed to speak but was trapped in parliament by the protests.
He sent a message urging support for all campaigns against the coalition’s cuts.
