Victory at Gateway College in Leicester

NUT union members have won a victory at Gateway College in Leicester.

Management had tried to force through an unfair classroom observation policy.

This would have meant teachers suffering unlimited observations with no notice.

Teachers would have been deemed as “incapable” after two consecutive “need to improve” grades.

Now management has accepted that they will specify the time and date of any observation, and the class to be observed. No teacher will have more than three observations a year.

A joint trade union consultative committee has been set up and will negotiate teachers’ preferred classroom observation policy with management.

When teachers struck against the observations policy they won a strong show of solidarity.

There were lively and well organised picket lines of up to 30 teachers on each strike day.

NUT membership has grown from 37 to 61. Some 80 percent of teachers are now in the NUT.
