Those hit by the Bedroom Tax told their shocking stories at the United Nations Bedroom Tax hearings held in Manchester last Saturday.

The UN Special Rapporteur On Housing, Raquel Rolnik, conducted an “in country investigation” into housing rights in Britain.

From Barnsley to Milton Keynes, Bolton to Anglesey, people told their stories.

The UN investigator was visibly shocked stories of hurt and despair caused by the Bedroom Tax.

Yasmin, a tenant from Rochdale was one of many who gave testimony. “At last somebody is actually listening,” she said.

At the end of the hearings Rolnik summarised her findings.

On the question of housing rights, “Comparing the UK to the UK there is clear evidence of retrogression,” she said. “There has been human rights violations in housing.”

To rapturous applause she said that her central recommendation would be for the Bedroom Tax to be abolished.
