Election candidates were campaigning down to the wire as Socialist Worker went to press.
The Tories looked set to lose substantial numbers of seats—and Labour to gain many.
The Labour Party has failed to lead the fight against Tory austerity. But in the many places where Labour is the only opposition, Socialist Worker calls for a vote for Labour. In particular we are backing Ken Livingstone in the London mayoral elections.
However, where there are serious candidates to the left of Labour, Socialist Worker supports them.
Socialist Worker supporters are standing as part of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC). It is standing council candidates in many areas and also for the London Assembly.
And in Scotland we are part of the Scottish Anti-Cuts Coalition.
In Preston, Michael Lavalette is standing as an independent socialist, fighting to reclaim the council seat he held for eight years until last year.
And in Bradford, Respect is hoping to build on George Galloway’s byelection victory by making gains on the council.
