Voucher betrayal
THE GOVERNMENT has enraged trade union leaders and refugee campaigners by deciding not to abolish the voucher scheme. The betrayal was revealed in the Times this week.
Home Office ministers claim they can’t find an alternative to the vouchers refugees are forced to live off instead of cash. The Times interviewed refugees forced to live on vouchers. Bazhadi Hussan, an Iraqi refugee living in Liverpool, said, “We may as well have asylum seeker tatooed on our forehead.
“Carrying these damn vouchers makes us a target for racists and thieves.” But New Labour is determined to be “tough on asylum”. It has reinstated a checkpoint by immigration officers in Prague’s Ruzyne airport in the Czech Republic to stop all Roma people trying to fly to London.
New Labour had been forced to abandon the checkpoint after three weeks because of a public outcry at the racism of immigration officials.
