Campaigners in Wales are building for the Wales and the World conference, which includes speakers like journalist George Monbiot, Barry Coates from the World Development Movement and writer Colin Hines.

The conference will take up similar themes to the Globalise Resistance conferences coming up in England and Scotland. The conference in Wales is organised by Cynefin y Werin (Common Ground). Ben Gregory, one of the organisers, told Socialist Worker how the conference came about:

‘We are an umbrella group for different peace and campaigning groups that has been going for about two and a half years. We organised an alternative conference to the Euro-summit held in Cardiff in 1998, and around 400 to 500 people attended over the four days. We are holding 12 workshops at the new conference including ones on poverty in Wales, environmental issues and the fair trade campaign. I think people are taking a much bigger interest since the protests around the World Bank, IMF and WTO. We are part of the movement that is developing.’
