Inside the Warwick occupation

More than 20 students at Warwick university in Coventry occupied the university’s Senate House yesterday, Friday. This morning saw the inaugural meeting of the Protect the Public University campaign inside the indefinite occupation.

The campaign is being launched in protest at the increasing marketisation of education. It demands that Warwick’s vice chancellor Nigel Thrift gives up the 20 percent pay increase he recently received. This £50,000 rise was the biggest in the Russell group of universities and comes as group is pushing for the abolition of the £9,000 tuition fee cap.

As one student said, this pay increase will further open up the inequality divide between himself, and the rest of the staff and students at Warwick.
