Welfare ‘mega-sum’ is not enough to live on in London

A £500 a week benefit cap is set to come into effect in four pilot London boroughs next week. Labour’s Frank Field called it a “mega-sum”. But the increasing cost of living means that people need it.

The cap will hit at least 1,000 people in Haringey, north London, and 500 in Croydon, south London, straight away. Other councils have already started telling people they should leave London.

Campaigners in Tottenham in Haringey are building for a “1,000 mothers march for justice” against the changes. It was set to take place on Saturday of next week.

A protest at the benefit delivery centre where the cap will be administered in Stratford, east London, has been called for Monday of next week.
