Issue 2269

For civil service workers, the current average pension is just £4,000 a year. For women in local government the average is just £2,600.

The Tories want to cut these meagre pensions even further. They want us to:

lPay more: pension contributions will be hiked by 50 percent or more.

lWork longer: until as old as 68. Can you imagine a 68 year old working in your hospital or emptying the bins?

lGet less: pensions will rise with the CPI rate of inflation, not RPI. CPI is almost always the lower rate, so this will cut tens of thousands from pensions.

Meanwhile, MPs require just 15 years in office to walk away with an annual pension of £25,000. Tesco boss Terry Leahy will get £850,000 a year.
